Trans Morocco Trail & high atlas traverse

Congrats Chris Scott to you and your team [Ed Gill] for the fantastic work. Many of us couldn’t have the opportunity to get to know this side of Morocco, with out some kind of help. You made possible, for the average rider, to experience advanced skilled territories. Again, THANK YOU!

Welcome to Morocco’s two new long distance adventure trails

TMT: from THE Mediterranean to the Atlantic, via the Sahara Desert and Atlas Mountains. and NEW FOR 2026, H.A.T: traversing the high atlas watershed

I must thank Chris Scott and team [Ed Gill] again for researching such a fantastic place to go on an adventure… if anyone is thinking about [TMT]… just go and do it! It won’t disappoint!!

Whether on two wheels or four, pedal or engine powered, Chris Scott and Ed Gill’s 3250-km Trans Morocco Trail (TMT) quickly became an overland adventure phenomenon, combining deserted backroads and regular trails to explore Morocco’s vast and diverse landscapes.
The TMT spans the length and breadth of the country, starting on the Mediterranean coast at Nador. From here it winds south across the desolate Rekkam plateau before weaving westwards, looping between the High Atlas ranges and the arid Saharan fringes to end on the wild Atlantic coast at Cap Draa.
And in December 2025, the High Atlas Traverse joined the TMT, a 900-km trail following the mountain watershed via the highest motorable trails.

We’ve just completed the Trans Morocco Trail [with 4×4] – and wow, what an incredible experience!. Endless landscapes, remote tracks, desert sections, mountains, and small villages far off the beaten path. Tough days, long rides, dust, heat… and moments that simply took our breath away.

Easy access from Europe

Nador, the start of the Trans Morocco Trail, is easily accessed with regular ferries from Spain or France. At the Atlantic end of the TMT, it’s 1200km north to Tangier Med port where ferries leave every few hours to Spain.
The start of the H.A.T is just over 700km from TanMed, and half a day south of Marrakech. The Traverse ends near Midelt, 500km to TanMed or 400km to Nador.

Thanks to Chris and Ed for putting together such an brilliant route, The diversity is truly mind blowing, I feel I’ve travelled through 15 different countries in the 10 days or so I’ve been here

So difficult to pick a highlight, The wilderness of the eastern planes, Merzouga, Or the High Atlas

NAVIGATE the TMT & h.a.t on any device

The TMT and H.A.T are free-to-download tracklogs (‘breadcrumb trails’) used to follow either route using a smart phone, tablet or pretty much any other digital navigation device. The result of years of exploring, between them Ed and Chris have ridden or driven every mile of both trails, bar the H.A.T finale which got snowed over (see here). In the season the lively TMT/H.A.T Facebook Group provides near-daily user updates which get fed into the Master Maps.

What an amazing experience ! Started at Nador, finished due to time constraints at the end of P. Will definitely return to finish next year. Thanks to Chris and Ed for putting together such an brilliant route, The diversity is truly mind blowing, I feel I’ve travelled through 15 different countries in the 10 days or so I’ve been here. Enjoy your adventures along the TMT and H.A.T but PLEASE READ THE TMT/H.A.T FAQs

This is a fantastic initiative, THANK YOU Chris [and Ed]!
I’ve travelled to Morocco for work several times, and I’ve ridden 3000km alone on a 640Adv before Covid using your [Morocco Overland] book as a reference. Very useful. I just love this country, its geography, culture, and people. Now the TMT gives me a perfect reason to return ASAP.
